This column shows what happens when cracked mortar joints go unaddressed for too long. Water worked its way into the joints, and over time that constant moisture cycle caused the column to lean and bulge instead of standing straight. You can also see efflorescence forming along the brick, that white chalky residue is mineral deposits left behind as water tries to find its way back out of the masonry. Notice the darker, discolored section of brick compared to the rest of the wall. Water intrusion here is coming from the limestone caps above and cracked mortar joints below, letting moisture build up in this one area rather than drying out like the surrounding brick. You can also spot efflorescence forming in several of the joints, another sign of water moving through and finding a way out. The overhanging tree branch makes it worse by blocking direct sunlight, so this section rarely gets the chance to fully dry between rain events, keeping moisture trapped longer than normal. You can see mold spreading across the wood framing and insulation, a direct result of moisture that had nowhere to go. Wood that stays wet for extended periods starts to break down structurally, which is exactly what's happened here.
